Paint a tree-like object

A technique for those who don’t have ability, or don’t want to take much time, to paint background of your image.

Create a brush

First, make an image used as a brush.
It is better to make the size of the image large. You can shrink it if you feel too large.

The mode of the image should be Grayscale. Select the main menu’s “Image->Mode->Grayscale”.

Create layers in the image and paint a shape of a leaf as you like.
You should create an Alpha Channel of the layer. Select “Add Alpha Channel” from the “Layers” window’s context menu.
Paint one leaf per layer. Fill the background by white and paint the leaf shape by black. Make the leafs’ sizes almost the same, but it is better to randomize the directions and shapes.

Save the image you have created.
Save it in folder “brushes” in GIMP’s personal settings folder (“C:\Users\Your name.gimp-2.6” for Windows Vista, 7 and GIMP 2.6).
The extension should be “.gih” to save as Brush pipe format.

In “Save as Brush Pipe” dialog, configure as shown below.

If you have 6 layers, the configuration will be like this.

After you save the image, restart GIMP or click “Reload brushes” button of “Brushes” window to load the brush. If successful, the name you specified in the dialog will be shown in the list.

Here is the brushes I created.
Brush set
Put the unzipped file into folder “brushes” of your GIMP personal settings folder.
The brushes are freely available, but do not redistribute them as your product.

Paint a tree

Paint a tree with the brush you created.

Before painting, make a gradation of leaf colors, from dark green to bright green.
The point is to make the darker one blueish and the brighter one yellowish. It makes the gradation natural.

First, Shape the tree with the darkest green.
The tool is “Paintbrush” and the brush is the one you created.
Turn on “Apply Jitter” of the Paintbrush option. If you don’t, the envelope becomes straight and causes an unnatural result. You can turn on randomness if you like.
Leave the leaves’ shape on the envelope and fill in the inside.

Next, paint with the second darkest green.
Paint over the already painted area. Leave the darkest color on the opposite of the bright side. Paint inside roughly so that the individual leaves’ shape is left near the border.

Paint the third largest green with the same way.

Different way with the brightest green.
Make the spacing of the brush larger, such as 150.
Do not fill in the whole area, but paint like scattering leaves.

It does not look like a tree? Put off your glasses or contact lens. Don’t look, feel.
